How it works

Groups built around one level and shared objectives.

For a group to make progress together, the participants have to be able to work at a similar pace and share needs that are close enough.

That is why I put groups together from the results of the audit and the level tests, rather than from the company's teams or departments.

Why the balance of the group matters

A pace that fits

Everyone can take part

When the levels are close, the activities stay within reach for everyone and each person has enough room to speak.

Shared progress

The group moves forward together

Participants can work on the same situations while making progress from their own difficulties.

A steadier dynamic

The sessions stay useful for everyone

A coherent group makes it possible to keep a regular rhythm and to hold the participants' involvement through the training.

The CEFR, a shared reference

The CEFR, the common European framework of reference for languages, defines six levels of competence, from A1 to C2.

I use it to place each participant and to make groups easier to form. The level remains a reference point, though: the objectives and the uses of French count as well.

A1
Understanding and using very common expressions, introducing yourself and answering simple questions.
A2
Handling simple everyday exchanges: appointments, shops, personal information.
B1
Getting by in most everyday situations, telling a story and explaining a problem.
B2
Taking an active part in a conversation, developing a point of view and working in French more easily.
C1
Expressing yourself with ease and precision, including in complex professional situations.
C2
Understanding and expressing yourself with a very high command, both spoken and written.

Moving from one level to the next depends on the starting point, on how often the lessons happen, and on the work done between sessions.

Group composition

A few principles for forming a coherent group.

  • Levels that are closeParticipants are grouped from their actual level. A slight gap is possible as long as it stays compatible with the group's pace.
  • Shared objectivesThe level is not enough. Participants also have to have needs close enough to work together.
  • Up to eight participantsI favour small groups, to keep speaking time and let everyone take an active part.
  • Groups that can changeI follow progress all along the training. If the gap between participants grows too wide, I can change the group's composition.

When is one-to-one the better choice?

The group works particularly well when several members of staff share close objectives and levels.

Some situations do call for more personal support, though: preparing for an exam, starting a new role, a very specific objective, or a level noticeably different from the others'.

In those cases, one-to-one lessons may be the better fit.

Another format

One-to-one lessons

For an individual need, a precise objective, or when no group can be made even enough.
